Early lifeEdit

Princess Estelle was born at 04:26 CET on 23 February 2012, she measured 51 cm and weighed 3280 grams.[1] She is the eldest child and only daughter of Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland and Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden.

Her mother is the eldest child and daughter of Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden and her father is the only son and second child of Mr Olle Westling and Mrs. Ewa Westling. She is the fourth grandchild and second granddaughter of Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.

Names Edit

Her names and title were announced on 24 February 2012 by her maternal grandfather, King Carl XVI Gustaf at a cabinet meeting. After the cabinet meeting a Te Deum was held in honour of the birth of the new princess. Present was her father Prince Daniel, her maternal and paternal grandparents, her paternal and maternal aunts and uncle.

Her names are:

  • Estelle: her grandfather said that “it is a name which is very close to the heart of the princess and also the family.” Estelle was the name of the American wife of Count Folke Bernadotte.
  • Silvia: in honor of her maternal grandmother, Queen Silvia of Sweden.
  • Ewa: in honor of her paternal grandmother, Ewa Westling.
  • Mary: in honor of her godmother, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.

Prior to the official announcement of her name and title, an error resulted in the royal website displaying the false name and title Ulrika Marianna Annika David - Duchess of Upplands Väsby which was later removed.[2] The staff eventually revealed the reason was that they were testing the system.[3]

Christening Edit

Main article: Christening of Princess Estelle, Duchess of Östergötland

Princess Estelle was baptized on 22 May 2012 at the Royal Chapel in Stockholm, Sweden. On the date of the baptism, a limited-edition prayer book titled Princess Estelle's Prayerbook (Swedish: Prinsessan Estelles bönbok) was released and published.[4]

Her godparents are Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland (her maternal uncle), Anna Westling Söderström (her paternal aunt), Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark, Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway and Willem-Alexander, Prince of Orange.

She was baptised in the family's antique baptismal gown which was first worn by Prince Gustaf Adolf when he was baptised in 1906. Her name and date of the baptism were added in embroidery to the gown.

Position Edit

Princess Estelle is second in the line of succession to the Swedish throne and also holds a distant place in the line of succession to the British throne after her mother, as a descendant of Princess Margaret of Connaught.

She is the first female in the history of Sweden to be born with a right to inherit the throne that cannot be superseded by the subsequent birth of a male heir. She is also the first person in the history of Sweden to be born the child of an heiress apparent. The only two princesses of Sweden before Estelle to be born first in line for the throne were both heiresses presumptive: Christina, who eventually became queen regnant, and Hedvig Sophia of Sweden, who was superseded by a younger brother.

Education and royal functions Edit

As second in line to the Swedish throne, Princess Estelle has been in the public eye since birth. On 17 May 2014, two-year-old Princess Estelle inaugurated a fairytale path, named in her honour as "Duchess Estelle's Fairytale Path" in Tåkern, Östergötland. At the time of her christening, she was presented with a miniature swan and certificate to the trail indicating that in the future she would perform official engagements there. She also visited Linköping Castle, where she was received by Elisabeth Nilsson, Kristina Zetterström and Ann-Catrine Hjerdt, the mayor of Linköping.

On 25 August 2014, Princess Estelle started preschool at Äventyret Preschool in Danderyd Municipality, Stockholm.[5] She started to attend the Campus Manila School in September 2018.[6]
