Prince Gabriel, Duke of Dalarna (Gabriel Carl Walther; born 31 August 2017), is the second child of Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland and Princess Sofia, Duchess of Värmland.

As of July 2020, Prince Gabriel is currently sixth in line to succeed the Swedish throne.

Early life Edit

Prince Gabriel was born on 31 August 2017 at 11.24 am at Danderyd Hospital in Danderyd, Sweden as the second son of Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland and Princess Sofia, Duchess of Värmland. She weighed 3400 grams and was 49 cm long at birth.[1] He is sixth grandchild and fourth grandson of Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Silvia of Sweden and second grandchild of Erik and Marie Hellqvist.

On September 4, five days after the birth of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia’s second child Prince Gabriel, a Te Deum service of thanksgiving was held at the Royal Chapel of the palace in Stockholm.[2]

He has one older brother, Prince Alexander, Duke of Södermanland (b. 2016).

Names and titles Edit

On September 4, 2017, at a Council at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, his paternal grandfather King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden announced his full name and title: His Royal Highness Prince Gabriel Carl Walther of Sweden, Duke of Dalarna.[3]

  • Gabriel: The name Gabriel has never been used in the Swedish royal family so it is assumed it is the name his parents liked.
  • Carl: For his paternal grandfather King Carl XVI Gustaf.
  • Walther: For his paternal great-grandfather Walther Sommerlath, the father of his grandmother Queen Silvia.

Prince Gabriel was christened on 1 December 2017 at the Chapel of the Drottningholm Palace.

Archbishop Emeritus Anders Wejryd officiated at the christening assisted by the Chaplain to The King, Bishop Johan Dalman and the Reverend Michael Bjerkhagen, Court Chaplain and Rector of the Royal Court Parish.[4]

His godparents are Princess Madeleine, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland (his paternal aunt), Thomas de Toledo Sommerlath (his father's cousin), Sara Hellqvist (his maternal aunt), Oscar Kylberg (his father's friend) and Carolina Pihl (his mother's friend)

On 7 October 2019 it was announced that the King has decided that Prince Gabriel will no longer be member of The Royal House. While he will retain his title of a Duke previously granted by the King, he will no longer enjoy the style of Royal Highness.[5]
