Prince Gabriel of Sweden, Duke of Dalarna (Gabriel Carl Walther; born 31 August 2017), is the second child of Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland and Princess Sofia, Duchess of Värmland. As of December 2021, Prince Gabriel is sixth in line to succeed the Swedish throne.

Early life[]

Prince Gabriel was born on 31 August 2017 at Danderyd Hospital in Danderyd, Sweden as the second son of Prince Carl Philip, Duke of Värmland and Princess Sofia, Duchess of Värmland.[1] He has one older brother, Prince Alexander, Duke of Södermanland (b. 2016), and one younger brother, Prince Julian (b. 2021). The Prince's full name is Gabriel Carl Walther and substantive title is Duke of Dalarna, which was announced by his grandfather King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden on 4 September 2017.[2]

Prince Gabriel was christened on 1 December 2017 at the Chapel of the Drottningholm Palace. Archbishop Emeritus Anders Wejryd officiated at the christening assisted by the Chaplain to The King, Bishop Johan Dalman and the Reverend Michael Bjerkhagen, Court Chaplain and Rector of the Royal Court Parish. His godparents are Princess Madeleine, Duchess of Hälsingland and Gästrikland, Thomas de Toledo Sommerlath, Sara Hellqvist, Oscar Kylberg and Carolina Pihl.[3]

Titles, styles, and honours[]

Titles and styles[]

  • 31 August 2017 – 6 October 2019: His Royal Highness Prince Gabriel of Sweden, Duke of Dalarna
  • 7 October 2019 – present: Prince Gabriel of Sweden, Duke of Dalarna[4]

Gabriel was initially styled His Royal Highness Prince Gabriel, Duke of Dalarna. On 7 October 2019 the king issued a statement recinding the style Royal Highness and removing Gebriel from the royal house in an effort to more strictly associate Swedish royalty to the office of the head of state; he is still to be styled as a prince and duke and remains in the line of succession to the throne.
